Souvlaki Greek Eatery @ Market Halls

Well I was back from my holiday and expecting to hate every minute of my day, yet the commute was smooth and the day was alright.

    Except for burnt fish.

We went to Market Halls for lunch, it’s kind of safe for a group, and there weren’t that many traders that I haven’t tried yet.

Souvlaki Greek Eatery was one of the few – offering souvlaki, trays, skewers and other fairly random dishes like spicy chicken pasta.

I’d ordered the fish tray at £16.75 – which had a scattering of vegetables on it such as red onion, tomatoes and a small piece of jarred pepper. They all tasted as they should do, without any excitement.

The fries were pretty basic and kind of crappy, probably from Brakes or somewhere – a bit of a dry yack to them. But the spice on them did cheer them up somewhat.

Then the piece de resistance – I certainly resisted eating it. Burnt fish. Supposedly a whole seabass fillet – perhaps I should just have eaten the fish and left the skin, but the skin was fairly cremated and it just tasted of burnt.

This all came on a rather dry and flaky flatbread.

The mustard yoghurt was quite nice, but I wouldn’t let it skew your decision towards ordering from here I’m afraid.

Rating of 4.00 out of 10. One of the worst things I’ve had on my lunch.

Also curious about the guy on the desk near me that spent 10 minutes thoroughly cleaning his desk, then left the wipes, etc on another desk.

Oh and the train home was painfully delayed, you’ll be relieved to know.

  • 20ft Fried Chicken @ Market Halls

20ft Fried Chicken @ Market Halls

It is the season for choosing whether to freeze on the way to work and cope with the office temperature, or cope with the outside temperature and boil in the office.

And it is also the season for Christmas sandwiches – this week at 20ft Fried Chicken.

Or Crimbmo Sando’s, if you are linguistically challenged.

Sadly they’d run out of stuffing, for the Crimbo Sando (please don’t make me type this again), though I still fancied that more than the Pigs in Blanket burger that seems to have no pigs in blankets, from what I can see.

However, stuffing was replaced with an extra chicken tender, so all was not lost, apart from the spirit of Christmas. Sorry, spirit of Crimbo.

So I had to use a knife and fork, which given my distaste of the spelling of sandwich, you might not be too surprised by.

The chicken tenders were excellent – juicy and perfectly cooked. There was some kind of spicy sauce, tomato-ish perhaps – unexpected too.

Cabbage was softly braised, the bread a bit basic – with missing crusts. Why? Or do sando’s not have crusts on all 4 sides?

Finally, the only bit which perhaps remained Christmas-ish, the chicken gravy which looked weird and there was far too little of, but also was quite heavenly in a minimal way. Lots of chicken fat going on in that gravy.

Rating? Oh I don’t know…7 out of 10 perhaps? I’d go again to 20ft Fried Chicken, but I love fried chicken nearly half as much as working from home.

  • Breddos Tacos @ Market Halls

    Breddos Tacos @ Market Halls

I made it to Market Halls at last. And I made it to Breddos Tacos…also at last.

I went from one fairly dark room in the office, to another fairly dark room at Market Halls – well, it didn’t have the vibrant sunshine of sitting outside on the Cheese Barge, anyway.

Then again, sunshine seems to have done one.

Also I’ve found the office equivalent of the person in front of you on the plane leaning back…and that is the person in front of you moving their standing desk up, and blocking the light. Granted all the blinds are down anyway…who wants to see the outside world? Well, I do.

Anyway. Tacos. Gloriously, messy tacos. And it was messy.

Breddos Tacos thankfully doesn’t have too many options to choose from – once I’d actually chosen which of the 7 or so places in Market Halls to eat from.

    Menu at Breddos Tacos.

It was 3 tacos for £12.00, I had a mixture of mushroom, chicken and the fish tacos.

The mushroom taco was the messiest, and the one with more of a kick – which I guess was the jalapeño.

3 tacos side by side, fish, chicken and mushroom ones.

The fish was my favourite, in a tempura batter with bits of raw cabbage, onion and tomatoes, the flavour of the habanero mayo was probably why I was such a fan.

Alas the chicken one didn’t really do it for me, again messy though also the chicken seemed quite dry.

Overall I was very happy with Breddos Tacos, maybe a score of 7.70 out of 10. I’ll be surprised if I’m not back for a quesadilla at some point…heck probably everything else off the menu at some point.
